For instance, do I need to run the application (service) on many instances (pods)? If so, would the design allow for that? How about ensuring that the alarm goes off only once? All of these could be requirements (NFRs/architectural characteristics) that the design must support.

It’s just a namespacing thing where you don’t define it in the outer namespace, you define it in the inner namespace, but it doesn’t change anything about what the function can do.
